  4. About this version
  5. This archive is the unregistered version of PowerFantasm V4.19a, available from Lightsoft.
  6. PowerFantasm is a 680x0 and PowerPC assembly language development environment for Macintosh.

  8. What is 'Fantasm'?
  9.  
  10. Fantasm is a very fast assembly language development system for the Apple
  11. Macintosh™ series of computers.  PowerFantasm, Fantasm and Eddie are written in 100% assembly language for maximum speed.

  13. Fantasm will only run on 68020 and higher machines (i.e. 020, 68030, 68040, and  all 
  14. PowerPC machines).

  16. Why would anybody want to write in assembly language these days?
  17. Because it's the fastest language you can get. The only limit is the programmer, and not the compiler.

  20. What is 'Eddie'?
  21. Eddie is an fast text editor that is integrated with Fantasm v4. 
  22.  
  23. It will, in addition to lots of other features:
  24.     - 'Chroma code' your 680x0 and PowerPC programs to make it easy to spot syntax errors.
  25.      These colours are user definable.
  26.     - It allows hyperjumping to subroutines (and macro and data definitions) with a click of the
  27.      mouse, even if they are in other files. 
  28.     - It allows global searching of all the files within the current files directory 
  29.       (ever wanted to know where that piece of text was in all those source files?).
  30.     - allow you to build and assemble projects on the click of a button without 
  31.       leaving Eddie.
  32.     - transfer to Fantasm seamlessly on the press of a button.
  33.     - open multiple windows, with unlimited file sizes.
  34.     - allows multiple automatic backup and save options to minimise the change of loss
  35.       of your code (should you lose power, or another application crash).
  36.     - show built in quick reference quides.
  37.     - feedback in Eddie on errors. This also allows for hyperjumping when Fantasm 
  38.          comes across an error
  39.   - is language aware - meaning Eddie can offer language reference guides, block commenting
  40.     facilities and syntactical source colouring.
  41.   - Can control your CD player for audio CD playback.

  44. What does Fantasm produce?
  45.  
  46. It currently produces code that can run on any 680x0 machine (including 68000's and 040's)
  47. and any PowerPC (including 32 bit 40x,601,603,604, and 64 bit 620 code). It can produce 
  48. PowerPC code in BOTH environments.

  50. To run Fantasm you need:
  51.  
  52. A Mac with at least an 020 processor - or a PowerMac (naturally enough).
  53.  
  54. PCI PowerMacs are no problem as PowerFantasm is written on PCI machines.
  55.  
  56. For best display in Eddie, 256 colours is ideal, but anything else is ok.

  58. A few megs of RAM - 4 megs is ok for 68k and 8 megs is fine for PowerPC.

  61. A couple of megs free on your hard disk.

  63. You may also find you need the following software:

  65. Macsbug (C) Apple - available from Apple direct on the internet. Point you web
  66.                     browser at <URL:ftp://ftp.austin.apple.com//Apple.Support.Area

  68.                     Debuggers_-_dcmds/>. Also from BB's, PD/Shareware 
  69.                     libraries, or your local Apple dealer.

Fantasm is a specialist product not of interest to everybody. However, we feel it vitally important that the Macintosh community have access to a stand alone assembly language development system, that doesn't cost a fortune. If you have the opportunity to upload this demo to an on-line organisation, or shareware library, then please do, as it benefits not only us (Lightsoft), but the whole Mac community as a whole. Even if you have no interest in assembly  language, there are lots of other Mac users who do, and will thank you for your efforts, as we do in advance - Thank you.

  90. Whats not included in this unregistered version?
  91.  
  92. The full version of PowerFantasm comes on seven HD floppy disks. To get an unregistered version out has meant we've had to leave a lot out.

  94. Both Fantasm and Eddie have time limits imposed on them, and various other facilities are missing. Lots of documentation has been left out.

  96. The full versions of Fantasm and PowerFantasm come in at 13 and 21 megabytes respectively.

  98. What are the limitations of this unregistered version?
  99.  
  100. Fantasm:
  101. No PowerPC FPU maths instructions allowed.
  102. Limits on size of code you can produce.
  103. No libraries source code.
  104. Limited number of PowerPC header files.
  105. No shared libraries allowed apart from InterfaceLib.
  106. No assembling for Atari ST or outputting a straight binary file.
  107. Various other minor ommissions.
  108. No reference manual (181 A4 pages).
  109. Cut down user manual (full electronic version is 164 A4 pages).
  110. Only a few essential headers are provided.

  113. Eddie:
  114. No "search all files" feature.
  115. Won't boot after 30 days.

  117. General:
  118. Various ommisions in documentation, beginners guide and example source code etc.

  120. The user manual has been produced in black and white to save space.

  122. NOTE: Eddie and PowerFantasm work together quite closely. We suggest you always launch the system by booting Eddie - this is a demo limitation..

  124. Also, Fantasm will occasionally throw unregistered alerts at you if you exceed the demo limits. This means you will have to go to Fantasm to click "Ok". Eddie will tell you in it's status line when and if you need to do this.

  126. We have found it extrememly difficult creating a demo that doesn't hold up the natural proceedings. 
  127. We hope you can understand the necessity of putting limitations on the demo - we don't like it - indeed the limitations can cause problems as Eddie is multitasking and really doesn't expect to have it's control disrupted by an unscheduled alert box!
